An alleged drunk driver smashed head-on into a Cherry Hill police cruiser on Route 70 early Saturday morning, sending herself and an officer to the hospital, according to authorities.

According to Cherry Hill police, the incident occurred at 1:38 a.m. near Kingston Drive, and shut down the westbound lane of Route 70 for more than three hours between Ranoldo Terrace and Kingston Drive.

Police said the driver of a green 1988 Chevrolet Malibu was allegedly traveling east on the westbound side of Route 70 near the WaWa at Kingston Drive when she reportedly struck the officer. Another vehicle behind which the officer had been driving was able to swerve out of the way quickly, according to a statement from police.

Both drivers were taken to Cooper Hospital for treatment and were later released. Police said the driver of the Malibu, as yet unidentified, was issued motor vehicle summonses and was charged with Driving While Intoxicated (DWI); she also faces additional charges.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact Cherry Hill Police Sgt. Glenn Charney at 856-761-4314.
