In the past six days, 11 more Camden County residents have lost their battles with the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), and an additional 1,529 have tested positive, according to reports from the Camden County government.
That brings the local impact of the pandemic to 26,461 infected residents and 703 related deaths.
“Even with several key indicators trending in the right direction, we are still seeing an average of more than 280 new cases of COVID-19 per day,” said Camden County Freeholder-Director Lou Cappelli in a statement Tuesday.
“With viral transmission this widespread, it remains critical that we take every precaution possible to protect our loved ones this holiday season,” Cappelli said. “Small sacrifices today will mean more time to spend with friends and family in the years to come.”
The 11 most recently deceased Camden County residents hail from seven communities:
- two Camden City women, one each in her 60s and 90s; and a man in his 60s
- a Cherry Hill woman in her 100s
- a Gloucester Township man in his 70s
- a Lindenwold man in his 50s
- two Pennsauken men, one each in his 60s and 90s
- a Runnemede man in his 80s
- a Voorhees man in his 80s, and a woman in her 90s
Throughout New Jersey, 445,138 people have been sickened by COVID-19, and 16,521 have perished from causes related to the virus. In addition to those lab-confirmed fatalities, the state also recognizes another 1,945 probable COVID-19-related deaths.

LTC cases and deaths
Long-term care (LTC) facilities account for almost half of all deaths in the state and 11 percent of those infected, and new cases continue to occur there.
Of 26,461 reported local COVID-19 cases, 2,856 (11 percent) have originated in a Camden County LTC facility: 1,886 are residents and 970 are staff.
LTCs are believed to be associated with 53 percent, or 372 of 703 total deaths in Camden County: 369 were residents and three were staff.
At this time, 30 of the 56 LTCs in Camden County are experiencing an active outbreak of COVID-19.
New cases
According to the New Jersey Department of Health COVID-19 dashboard, on December 23, Camden County was eighth in the state in new COVID-19 cases, with 278.
In response to the uptick in cases, pop-up testing sites have been established in Camden City at three schools on a rolling schedule. No appointment is required, and the sites are open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the following days:
- Monday: Veterans Memorial School, 800 North 26th Street in Cramer Hill
- Wednesday: Cooper Poynt School, 201 State Street in North Camden
- Thursday: Dr. Charles Brimm Medical Arts High School, 1626 Copewood Street in Whitman Park
Camden County also maintains a pop-up testing site at the Cherry Hill campus of Camden County College and another at the Charles J. DePalma complex in Lindenwold. For a full list of local testing sites, click here.
