Camden County residents will encounter road closures and work zones across the region for the next 12 to 18 months, as PSE&G continues its long-term gas system modernization project.

This work comprises new construction activity along Ventnor, South Newton Lake, and Lees Avenues in Collingswood this week, and has been underway in Oaklyn since April, since August in Haddon Township.

Upgrading gas lines involves digging trenches and laying new pipes to replace underground infrastructure that may be as much as a century old.

The public utility backfills trenches with temporary asphalt and steel plates daily, but the construction process can change traffic patterns, bring noise and heavy equipment to the neighborhood, and force residents to park farther away from their destinations.

Work is typically conducted between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays, although some work also transpires on weekends. PSE&G describes its schedules as “estimates, weather-dependent, and subject to change.”

One the work is completed, technicians may schedule follow-up appointments to reconnect service lines and gas meters to new mains; if a gas meter must be replaced on a property, it will be relocated to the exterior of the premises.

PSE&G has committed to “restor[ing] any disturbance after the service work is completed,” including patching road and sidewalk surfaces as well as re-seeding lawns, the company said.
