Thirteen more Camden County residents have died from complications related to novel coronavirus (COVID-19), and 17 others have been infected with the virus.
That brings the local death toll to 458 residents lost to the pandemic and 7,754 others sickened by the virus.
The newly announced deaths occurred between May 18 and June 16, according to the Camden County government.
Throughout New Jersey, 171,667 people have been sickened by COVID-19, and 13,181 have perished from causes related to the virus; another 1,854 deaths have been deemed to be probably COVID-19-related as well.
Rate of transmission (Rt) up
The statewide average of COVID-19 spot positivity testing stood at 1.82 percent June 26; in South Jersey, it’s almost double, at 3.36 percent.
Rt, or the estimated rate of transmission of new cases of the virus, was 0.88 percent on June 28, up 0.02 from day-ago readings.
That figure indicates that every person infected with COVID-19 is infecting less than one other person, on average. However, it has continued to climb steadily from a low of 0.62 recorded on June 9.
According to the New Jersey Department of Health COVID-19 dashboard, on June 30, Camden County ranked ninth in the state with 22 new COVID-19 cases.
“As cases continue to rise in other states, Camden County’s growth rate has remained steady,” said Camden County Freeholder-Director Lou Cappelli in a statement.
“We are averaging just 26 new cases per day over the past week, and we are seeing growth rates of under one percent,” Cappelli said.
LTC cases and deaths
Long-term care (LTC) facilities account for almost half of all deaths in the state and one-fifth of those infected, and new cases are still being discovered there.
Of 7,754 reported local COVID-19 cases, 1,772 (23 percent) have originated in a Camden County LTC facility: 1,299 are residents and 473 are staff.
LTCs are believed to be associated with 66 percent, or 301 of the 458 total deaths in Camden County; 298 were residents and three were staff.
More than half the 56 LTCs in Camden County (30) have experienced at least one case of COVID-19.
“We must work harder than ever to protect our neighbors and those most vulnerable members of our community,” Cappelli said. “If we continue to social distance and wear masks and face coverings, we will keep trending in the right direction.”
The deceased are:
- two Camden City women, one each in her 80s and 90s
- three Cherry Hill women, one each in her 70s, 80s, and 90s
- a Gloucester Township woman in her 80s
- a Runnemede man in his 30s
- a Stratford woman in her 90s
- three Voorhees women, two in their 90s and one in her 80s; and a man in his 80s
- a Winslow woman in her 70s
The newest local cases are:
- a Bellmawr man in his 40s
- two Camden City women, one each in her 20s and 30s
- a Gloucester City man in his 20s
- two Gloucester Township women in their 20s, and a person of unknown gender in their 40s
- a Mount Ephraim woman in her 40s
- a teenaged boy from Pennsauken
- a Voorhees man in his 20s and woman in her 50s
- two Waterford men, one each in his 50s and 70s, and a woman in her 20s
- three Winslow women, one each in her 20s, 40s, and 60s
The Camden County and New Jersey Health Departments are working to facilitate trace investigations into all cases.
