Since Friday, another 1,151 Camden County residents have tested positive for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), according to reports from the Camden County government.

That brings the local impact of the pandemic to 17,773 infected residents and 596 related deaths.

“While Saturday’s figure [562 new cases] may be an outlier, it fits with the overall trend we have seen in recent weeks,” Camden County Freeholder-Director Lou Cappelli said in a written statement Monday.

“We’ve now seen dramatically more cases in the past 23 days than we did throughout the entire summer,” he said, noting that the driving force behind these cases continues to be small indoor gatherings.

“With Thanksgiving on the horizon, it is critical that we limit our exposure to others,” Cappelli wrote. “This year’s celebrations must be kept small, and ideally limited only to those in your immediate household.”

Those who develop symptoms are asked to self-isolate and get a COVID-19 test as soon as possible.

Throughout New Jersey, 309,588 people have been sickened by COVID-19, and 14,960 have perished from causes related to the virus. In addition to those lab-confirmed fatalities, the state also recognizes another 1,812 probable COVID-19-related deaths.

LTC cases and deaths

Long-term care (LTC) facilities account for almost half of all deaths in the state and 14% of those infected, and new cases continue to occur there.

Of 17,773 reported local COVID-19 cases, 2,441 (14 percent) have originated in a Camden County LTC facility: 1,684 are residents and 757 are staff.

LTCs are believed to be associated with 59 percent, or 353 of 588 total deaths in Camden County: 350 were residents and three were staff.

At this time, 23 of the 56 LTCs in Camden County are experiencing an active outbreak of COVID-19 cases.
